Dear Fellow Vermonters,

Is your daughter, son or grandchild graduating from high school or college this year? If so, congratulations! Unfortunately, you and your family may now be feeling the combined crunch of tuition costs and the lack of meaningful job opportunities in Vermont. You're not alone!
Campaign for Vermont's mission is to help build a vibrant economy in our state, one that generates both high-paying jobs for our citizens and highly-skilled workers for current and potential employers. We applaud our local colleges and employers for thinking outside the box in creating a wide variety of internship and apprentice programs. These programs often result in a win-win for students and employers.
This same creative thinking has not taken place for the most part with our K-12 education. Enrollment has dropped by 7.4% since 2005, but spending per pupil is near the top in America and among the highest in the world. So, are we getting the best bang for our buck? Many employers inform us that prospective employees often can't even balance a checkbook, and simply don't possess the basic skills required for entry level positions. Community College of Vermont President Joyce Judy noted at a recent workforce development discussion in Windsor that only 40% of our high school seniors are choosing to go on to higher education. According to Judy this ranks Vermont 48th in the country. These graduates will now have two choices; to fight for one of the unskilled positions becoming scarcer every day, or to leave home for greener pastures. We can do better.
Click on the Education & Property Tax tab to check out our thoughts on education; Founding Partner and Vermont Representative Heidi Scheuermann has proposed an education reform proposal, but so far there has been no discussion of it. Also check out the Economy & Jobs tab for some interesting information.
It's time to start an open and robust dialog about Vermont’s future!
All the best,

Bruce
